Robert Waldinger, MD - The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness
Robert Waldinger is a psychiatrist and professor at Harvard Medical School who oversees the Harvard Study of Adult Development, the longest study of adult life ever conducted. Initiated in 1938 with 724 young men from diverse backgrounds, including Harvard undergraduates and individuals from Boston's poorest families, the study expanded to include spouses and children, totaling nearly 3,000 participants. Now in its 86th year, the study examines various aspects of life, such as physical and mental health, relationships, and work, using traditional methods like questionnaires and interviews alongside modern techniques like DNA analysis and brain scans. Remarkably, only 22% of participants dropped out over the study's duration, attributed to ongoing engagement efforts such as birthday cards, thank-you notes, and medical referrals, fostering a sense of community. Waldinger's recent book, "The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness," highlights the study's findings on the importance of relationships for happiness, health, and longevity. It features real-life stories of study participants and clear explanations of scientific findings, emphasizing how relationships help individuals weather life's challenges and maintain overall well-being. The study continues to explore how relationships evolve, including studying the second generation of participants and their experiences during events like the pandemic and their use of social media. As the fourth director of the study, Waldinger underscores the enduring scientific legacy of the research, which continues to provide insights into human development across generations.

As a Canadian, I feel your book is very relevant in our country today. I only wish there were Canadian scholars discussing this openly, as I think Canada has fallen into the "identity trap". Each indigenous group (600 first nations) self identifying, and with it, comes past grievances, which are pursued through courts and ending up with large settlements that taxpayers fund. Other "groups" self identify with their select past grievances then seek legal recourse. The PM declaring in the NYT the "Canada as the world's first post nationalistic state" which was never discussed much in Canada. The country has broken up into little enclaves, the "universal" vision is gone. Although acknowledging past grievances is part of the solution, cancelling out the (white) "colonisers" which include the first PM of Canada in 1867 and early immigrant settlors, whom most Canadians value, is going backwards. We need some of your vision here.

Ms. Hicks! Seven minutes and fifty-four seconds I will never get back. Your only body of work relates to dignity and conflict resolution. Do you really think you can resolve major conflicts with this pathetic attempt at stating something remotely interesting or profound? The entire history of humanity revolves around human interaction and conflict; the constant struggle to find mutual understanding, respect, and compromise for one another. Why on earth do you think you can change human nature at its core? It is ridiculous to think that you are contributing anything to society with these atrocious talks. Please stop. However, I do agree with one of your points. You stated that “people want an apology when someone does them wrong.” This is absolutely correct. I do. I do want an apology for you putting out this garbage content. I do want an apology for your insufferable voice forcing me to throw my $1,200 laptop out of the window. Please treat everyone with dignity and retire.

Sounds good. I'd be happy if higher education was mostly something like job training, but for the 'truly' part I wish I and my fellow students had been offered Thucidides History Of The Peloponnesian War and tasked to discuss it in relation to current human behavior. Probably other books, The Prince, for instance, would serve, but the idea is to truly educate us, not brainwash or leave us ignorant regarding power. Maybe also a psychology class in the makeup of people who seek power and people who support it.

You defend this position if you're a Marxist. Open Borders describes lack of border control checks which is happening with the millions of people entering the Southern and Northern borders of the USA and the UK. Soros funded bollox in the USA, nothing less. Typical you mentioning letting in Einstein, such a cheesy example. Your logic is flawed. "Once you calm down", just so patronising and ending with fake humility.

I don't understand why you frame the time period of transition as beginning after the administration of HW. In fact, the hostility and otherism begin with the first campaign of HW and his henchmen Lee Atwater, on his deathbed regretted what he had done to the country in that campaign. We had Willie Horton. We had the prissy New Englander HW pretending that the word liberal is obscene and could only be hinted at with the letter L out of his pure lips. Yes, he was not a populist in the sense that he had any connection with working class people, which he did not, but he percolated in a party that was already making home for the likes of Pat Buchanan. HW was the beginning of the turn of the Republican party toward nationalistic populism

I can’t believe, know, think differently than I do right now. How very sad for you and more importantly, our country.

Not sure what made this pop up in my list, but figured it was worth a quick watch. I always want to listen to someone who can articulate a position that I disagree with. It's VERY hard to do these days, because no one wants to have actual discussions. Then, I started watching and realized I don't disagree with you at all, at least in a theoretical sense. 2 years of econ grad school decades ago still rattles around in my brain, and I believe that any artificial constructs, including movement among borders, leads to inefficiencies. So, the world, as a whole, is better off with complete freedom of movement. An equilibrium will eventually take place. I get that. But, I think people (and maybe you?) will conflate that argument with what is happening today at the border, saying the huge influx done outside of the normal process is acceptable or that it is the same as the open border solution you propose. It absolutely is not. The problem is that the current system has a self-selection mechanism that filters what type of people come in. And, I think any border proposal, in the way you refer to it, must still have some order. Countries need to have some idea who is in their country. So, I'm not sure what my point is other than curious whether you are using your argument for open borders to argue that the current situation is acceptable?
